As part of a small, hard-working, and accomplished team of guides in the Human Integration group, you will be responsible for assisting in the design and development of Blue Origin’s human-system interfaces for ground assembly and control personnel. You will help drive the human factors of our space systems to improve the ground assembly team’s experience while maintaining the highest levels of safety and well-being and ensure that our systems are designed for operational ease both in space and on the ground.

Our team is a part of the design process from project definition through test and integration. We provide expertise in the areas of human-centered design including requirement development, human-in-the-loop test planning, task analysis, human error analysis, labeling standards, ergonomics, anthropometry, and ground interface design.

This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and the attention to detail needed to ensure safe and repeatable spaceflight for commercial and government applications. Responsibilities:

  • Application of Human Factors Engineering principles to ensure the following examples of human-centered design are considered:
  • Physical: visibility, reachability, physical usability, accessibility, injury prevention
  • Cognitive: workload, usability, situational awareness, human error
  • Environment: lighting, noise
  • Act as a technical liaison between engineering, design, and operations teams
  • Write and evaluate ground assembly human factors (HF) requirements to maximize ground personnel safety and well-being
  • Evaluate the design of ground crew-facing aspects of Blue Origin’s spacecraft systems
  • Develop HF verification plans
  • Perform HF analyses (e.g., task, human error, or worksite analyses)
  • Provide HF and ergonomics design support to Blue Origin’s manufacturing design teams
  • Design and run human-in-the-loop tests

Qualifications:

  • Passion for our mission: Millions of people living and working in space!
  • Minimum of a B.S. in Engineering or a related technical field
  • 5+ years of industry experience in HF or human-centered system design
  • A strong Systems Engineering background
  • A demonstrated interest in human-centered design
  • Experience in human-in-the-loop evaluation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in a technical field related to human factors
  • 10+ years of industry experience in HF or human-centered system design
  • Operational experience in a technology-intensive, safety-critical environment
  • Familiarity with OSHA standards and MIL-STD-1472
  • Experience in anthropometry, strength, and biomechanics
  • Experience in ground maintenance and assembly design
  • Experience in using Extended Reality (XR) during design and development
  • Vehicle user-interface design experience
