Job Details

New ideas are all around us, but only a few will change the world. That’s our focus at JPL. We ask the biggest questions, then search the universe for answers—literally. We build upon ideas that have guided generations, then share our discoveries to inspire generations to come. Your mission—your opportunity—is to seek out the answers that bring us one step closer. If you’re driven to discover, create, and inspire something that lasts a lifetime and beyond, you’re ready for JPL.

Located in Pasadena, California, JPL has a campus-like environment situated on 177 acres in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence.

Wanted: An Electrical Engineer with a range of skills related to the design, development, and testing of electronics and low-level software for embedded systems.

Opportunity: To join a world-class multi-disciplinary workforce that originates and executes robotics technology development and space flight projects for terrestrial and planetary exploration applications. This role is focused on supporting the development of embedded electronics and low-level software for the Mobility and Robotic Systems section at JPL. Potential work assignments include, but are not limited to, positions within robotics technology demonstration missions to the Moon, testbed ground support equipment for the upcoming Mars Sample Return Lander (SRL) mission, and a variety of robotics research tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to design and testing of electronic subsystems, including, but not limited to, robotics electronics elements such as the compute stack, sensing and perception functions, actuator motor drivers and closed-loop control.
  • Partners with other engineers in the design, layout, test and/or verification of electronic circuits, printed circuit boards, and assemblies.

  • Partners with other engineers in design and verification of embedded FPGA systems.
  • Conducts moderately complex analysis, characterization, and simulation of digital, analog, and mixed-signal electronics.
  • Searches and consolidates engineering data for electronic systems architecture, components, circuits, or products; Responds and reports engineering findings to other engineers.
  • Participates on concept development teams and contributes to technology development.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical discipline with 1+ years of related experience, or Masters degree in similar disciplines.
  • General understanding and application of standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
  • Has knowledge in the use of design tools for embedded electronics systems, including Arduino and other embedded processing, FPGA system development, circuit design and analysis, Altium Designer (or other circuit and PCB design tools), MATLAB/Simulink.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the development of embedded processing systems, including microprocessor cards and FPGA system elements.
  • Experience in the design and integration of technology for robotic systems, including motor tuning and control, stereo camera systems, IMU and GPS sensors.
  • Experience in programming in C, C++, Python, Matlab, ROS, interface protocols (RS232, I2C, etc.), and low-level drivers.
