Please review the job details below.

Maxar develops robotic solutions to tackle some of the toughest problems in space. From on-orbit assembly of satellites to planetary exploration, Robotics at Maxar is pushing the boundaries of space robotics. These technologies are a key steppingstone to creating larger and more complex space infrastructures that will continue to open space to commercial opportunities.

For more than two decades, Maxar robotics have empowered innovative commercial and government programs, including robotic arms on six of NASA’s Mars rovers and landers. This is your chance to join a highly capable team of roboticists and see your work push the boundaries of space exploration.

Maxar is seeking a Mechatronics Test Engineer to join our Robotics Test Engineering Department. In this role, you will be responsible for taking a leadership role to test complex mechanisms for use in a space environment. These mechanisms will typically be part of a Robotic Arm for larger spacecraft that crosses many scientific/engineering disciplines. You must be comfortable in a leadership role and being a technical focal point for a project.

Life With Us

As a Mechatronics Test Engineer you will help our team develop custom electromechanical hardware as well as custom software to control and test our robotic systems.

The ideal candidate has a passion for robotics and for space exploration, works efficiently on multiple projects, is eager to learn, and can work collaboratively in a remotely distributed team.  While we are looking for someone with strong, hands-on electromechanical and avionics skills, the work is varied and applicants must also demonstrate interest/skills in a wide range of disciplines including software development, hardware design and integration, motors, motion control, robotics, mechanisms, sensors, data acquisition, hardware integration, testing, and test data analysis. Strong documentation, communications, and version control experience is also desired. We are looking for well rounded, creative individuals with experience solving unique and challenging problems.

What you will do day-to-day (with your colleagues):

  • Design and build complex test systems for operating and testing controlled mechanisms per customer requirements

  • Execute Tests, analyze data troubleshoot systems of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and program requirements

  • Review and analyze technical customer requirements to generate clear test plans from concept to implementation.

  • Drive a team to meet schedule and cost targets while ensuring the deliverable unit meets the technical requirements

  • Prepare and present content for internal and external presentations for design reviews including PDR/CDR/TRR with Management and customers

  • Prepare and Present necessary information required to conduct thorough reviews with customer and/or internal management

  • Communicate with manufacturing to ensure successful transfer of information and efficient processes are understood and documented

Minimum Requirements for this position:

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Experience with Matlab, LabVIEW and Python

  • Experience with Git version control

These skills would be amazing:

  • Experience analyzing the performance of robotic hardware

  • Experience Testing motor drivers (including 3-phase BLDC motor torque controller, 4-quadrant drive, and commutation schemes).

  • Experience in the implementation and test of motion control systems  (continuous and discrete control systems approaches, stability analysis, PID tuning, state-space control, optimal control)

  • Strong practical experience with common actuators (BLDC, Brushed DC, Steppers), sensors (Resolvers and RDCs, Optical Encoders, F/T sensor), and Communication interfaces utilized in robotic systems (Serial, CAN, Ethercat, UDP).

  • Professional experience working with and troubleshooting critical electomechanical hardware in a laboratory environment

  • Advanced degree in Robotics or related field

  • General understanding of GIT UI/UX design

  • Additional language skills, e.g., Go, JavaScript
