Lead Systems Engineer - Reusable Space Transportation - Advanced Development Program

As part of a team of engineers, you are accountable for the overall systems design of the Reusable Space Transportation system. This role shares in the team’s impact on all aspects of a novel space vehicle where you will use your past experiences on rapid program development and cryogenic propellent transfer, storage, and management to manage the risk reduction for propellant transfer.

  • Carry out systems engineering activities in accordance with tailored system engineering standards and practices

  • Be the responsible owner of the entire systems engineering segment of the vehicle answerable directly to the senior director of the Reusable Space Transportation program

  • Act as the negotiator between multiple and sometimes conflicting interests in order to make sure the system as a whole is optimized, while ensuring internal and external stakeholders’ needs are being represented

  • Develop strategies, approaches for all aspects of the vehicle systems engineering, such as systems architecture, requirements, verification, validation, certification, and specialty engineering (such as environmental, reliability, EMI, etc)

  • Lead, inspire, and, coordinate functionally diverse group of technical leads in the areas of thermal protection, cryogenic fluid transfer, rendezvous proximity operation (RPO), orbital mechanics, avionics, propulsion, and so on.


  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Aerospace engineering or other technical field

  • Prior experience in designing a launch vehicle or stages of a launch vehicle

  • Understanding of the principles, concepts, and methods of systems engineering such as concept development, requirement definition, design solution definition, implementation, integration, verification and validation, qualification, commissioning, and operations

  • Self-directed and capable of balancing several tasks at one time

  • Demonstrated track record of resourcefulness and success from previous assignments and working with interdisciplinary and cross-functional teams

  • Experience leading technical projects successfully and within cost and schedule constraints

  • Ability to communicate, work effectively, and lead diverse technical teams through project execution and coordination

  • Act as a lead technical integrator and coordinate different functions including vendors and suppliers in support of the program goals

  • Participate and lead, as needed, in technical and programmatic customer interactions that require your expertise

  • Work inter-dependently with other leaders to drive progress at the organizational level

  • Mentor and educate junior Blue Origin employees on systems engineering processes and methods

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our culture of inclusion

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum


  • Successful candidates will typically have 10+ years of systems development and project management experience

  • Prior exoatmospheric flight engineering or related fungible experience

  • Prior experience in supersynchronous orbital missions

  • Prior experience in designing a reusable launch vehicle

  • Experience with PLM tools such as Windchill

  • Experience with software tools such as DOORS Next Generation, Cameo, MATLAB/Simulink, Confluence, JIRA, Git, Creo, and Windchill

The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.

Estimated salary wage (Colorado only): $156K-$260K
