Job Description

We're growing. Fast. To support this unprecedented growth phase, we're creating a Senior Test Engineer position to lead our projects through all phases of test, including development of test requirements and plans, test methods and equipment, and execution.  In this role, you’ll act as an expert on all test aspects of space hardware. You’ll be working across engineering teams to lead and coordinate best practices in test: supporting junior engineers, as well as planning, coordinating, and troubleshooting test campaigns. The ideal candidate will have significant prior experience in the space sector, with an emphasis on experience with deployable structures, solar arrays, and mechanisms.

You’ll be part of a growing and dynamic Analysis & Test (A&T) Group and reporting to the A&T Manager. If this sounds like you, then don’t hesitate to apply!

Essential Functions

  • Develop and manage high-value flight hardware test plans, from concept to execution
  • Develop test requirements and verification methods through close collaboration with the Systems Engineering team
  • Interface with the customer, negotiate test requirements and methods, jointly develop plans, and communicate and report on test progress
  • Represent test engineering at major program milestones and act as expert reviewer at Test Readiness Reviews
  • Identify testing methods and test fixturing for risk mitigation, prototype development and requirement verification
  • Plan and perform environmental testing of hardware, including functional testing (deployment/stow of deployable structures), vibration testing, thermal cycling, thermal vacuum, and other qualification tests
  • Develop and improve test capabilities of in-house facilities and interface with sister companies to leverage existing test capabilities across the business
  • Collaborate with various areas of the business, such as technicians, product and technical leadership, and program managers

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, physics, mathematics, or other space-related discipline with a minimum of 6+ years industry/related experience.
  • A Master’s or PhD degree in a related field may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • Hands-on experience in space, small satellites, and/or space-based deployable structures.
  • Experience assembling and/or testing hardware for space environments.
  • Experience in overseeing and processing data from environmental tests such as vibration, shock, thermal cycling and/or thermal-vacuum testing.
  • Familiar with writing test documentation, such as test plans, procedures, and reports.
  • Experience with preparing and leading project stage-gate meetings (such as CDR, TRR, etc.) and interfacing with customers.
  • US Citizen or Green Card holder (Visa sponsorship not accepted).

Desired Skills

  • Experience with rigging, off-loading, and testing of large structures is a strong plus
  • Background/understanding in composites design, analysis and manufacturing
  • Familiarity with NASA/SMC standards such as GSFC-STD-7000A (GEVS) or SMC-S-016
  • Experience using CAD to design and fabricate mechanical systems, fixturing, and/or mechanisms
  • Experience with structural and/or metrology test methods for characterizing structures
  • Proficient with using manual and electronic test equipment to measure loads, dimensions, displacements, electrical parameters, etc.
  • Experience and training in safe handling protocols for flight hardware, including cleanroom and ESD standards
  • Experience with test-analysis correlation, including the ability to understand, interpret, and validate analysis predictions through test methods
  • Experience with generating requirements and establishing appropriate verification criteria
  • Experience with data acquisition equipment, programming equipment, and LabVIEW
  • Experience designing, building, operating and maintaining turbo- and cryo-pumped thermal vacuum chambers
  • Experience with solar cell test methods is a plus, including electroluminescence, dark IV, LAPSS, and/or electrical testing
  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods for fast proof-of-concept development
  • Experience in supporting technical risk identification, mitigation planning and mitigation execution
  • Comfortable suggesting internal process improvements
  • Experience leading and mentoring junior engineers
  • Previous work within an AS9100 or similar accredited environment
