We have an exciting opportunity for a part-time Staff Principal Systems Engineer, working ~20 hours per week at our facility in Albuquerque, NM, LoadPath/Redwire to perform system requirements analysis activities for determination of an accepted set of design requirements to develop an Air Transportation System (ATS) for a modified SR119 Peacekeeper stage 2 rocket motor. In this role, you will be a key contributor within the engineering team, reporting to the Director of Engineering of Space Systems Albuquerque with other engineering functional managers serving as peers within the organization.

Additionally, the Staff Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for system-level requirements, and verification plans and processes to develop the associated USAF Peacekeeper rocket motor Type II transporter modification design. The design will address all requirements for the ATS including initial CONOPS needed to support SR119 Air Transportation from storage site to the launch site for turnover to the Launch Support Contractor.

 

Summary of Role

  • Develop detailed CONOPS to define all movements and equipment for all rocket motor configurations including existing and new design hardware/elements.
  • Support the identification, design development and procurement activities for both mechanical and electrical Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
  • Write, review, update, and execute detailed launch vehicle motor stage logistics and transportation plans.
  • Prepare technical documentation and give presentations to peers, management, and external customers and partners. 
  • Perform site visits etc. to review and document existing systems and gain understanding of current CONOPS, determine unique/undocumented interfaces, evaluate existing equipment and uses, assess available GFE and operational designs.
  • Conduct detailed review of technical requirements documents and allocate them across the conceptual design elements.
  • Conduct detailed review of documentation such as drawings, specifications, standards.
  • Develop preliminary design specification demonstrating compliance with requirements,
  • Support the design review process, customer interactions, and business development.
  • Travel Required- Up to an average of 10-15% travel may be required.

Ideal Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, aerospace or related field.
  • Minimum of fifteen years direct experience in launch vehicle assembly, integration, transportation, handling.
  • Experience with development of solid rocket motor-based launch vehicles and subsystems.
  • Experience with specification, adaptation, tailoring, application of relevant safety requirements, transportation and handling of solid rocket motors.
  • Experience with identification, specification, development, maintenance of rocket motor ground support equipment.
  • Experience with development of system design and interfaces of existing transportation structural mechanical features, including lifting, handling, and installation provisions for ATS roller system including operation and maintenance considerations.

Desired Skills

  • Experience working with the US Air Force and contractors to obtain compliance with the MIL-STD-1791 Rev-D ATTLA requirements for air worthiness certification of hardware.  
  • Demonstrated understanding of CONOPS, key interfaces, major and minor subassemblies of a verifiable design that has a reasonable pathway to achieve ATTLA air worthiness certification.
  • Experience with design and analysis for modifications to the existing equipment to enable the rocket motor container roll transfer into a C-17 Aircraft.
  • Experience leading launch range integration activities including facility preparation for launch vehicle integration.
