Job Details

New ideas are all around us, but only a few will change the world. That’s our focus at JPL. We ask the biggest questions, then search the universe for answers—literally. We build upon ideas that have guided generations, then share our discoveries to inspire generations to come. Your mission—your opportunity—is to seek out the answers that bring us one step closer. If you’re driven to discover, create, and inspire something that lasts a lifetime and beyond, you’re ready for JPL.

Located in Pasadena, California, JPL has a campus-like environment situated on 177 acres in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence.

As a Robotics Electrical Engineer in the Embedded Robotic Systems Group (347A), you will be working for JPL’s Mobility and Robotic Systems Section. We do system engineering, design and analysis, hardware development, testing, and operations support in Robotic areas for unique deep-space/earth-orbiting/planetary surface and aerial flight missions. We also perform world class research and technology development in robotic mobility and manipulation systems for space and planetary surface exploration, and for terrestrial applications.

Duties & Responsibilities

As a Robotics Electrical Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the development and deployment of embedded electronics for actuator control, sensing and avionics systems. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Development and verification of embedded systems for robotics technology for NASA flight projects

  • Concept and proposal development, R&TD, and publication of novel concepts for NASA and non-NASA programs

  • Mentor junior engineers

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electronics, Electrical or Computer Engineering or related discipline with typically a minimum of 9 years of related experience; M.S. in similar disciplines with a minimum of 7 years of related experience; or Ph.D. in similar disciplines with a minimum of 5 years of related experience.

  • Significant expertise in the design, implementation, and verification of electrical systems or subsystems for robotic spaceflight or terrestrial applications

  • Deep knowledge in motor control systems, including motor dynamics, commutation methods, harmonic/planetary gearing, actuator characterization and tuning, encoder and resolver feedback, and low/high level control loop methods.

  • Deep knowledge in ASIC and FPGA system design and verification, including coding in System Verilog, UVM verification environments, verification plan design and implementation, and full life cycle from initial concept to burn review/tapeout.

  • Leadership of design and/or verification teams to address major embedded systems technical issues; developing recommendations and advising management on those recommendations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in bus standards protocols such as: SpaceWire, PCI, MILSTD-1553, CAN, EtherCAT and Ethernet

  • Experience with SVA and static formal model checking

  • Experience with Mentor Questa Verification tool suite and Questa Verification IP

  • Experience with continuous integration (Jenkins) and configuration management (Github)

  • Experience designing and integrating Matlab/Simulink models

  • Experience with Elmo Application Studio or other motor control/configuration environments

  • Preparation of requirements documents, interface agreements, verification and validation (V&V) plans, and risk mitigation plans, and execution of V&V plan

  • Experience in the development of technology that has impacted mission, flight projects, and/or other research projects

  • Experience in design reviews with analyses for accuracy and completeness

  • Experience overseeing highly complex design and/or data analysis

  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills, including experience in writing proposals and publishing results in refereed journals and conferences
