Astrobotic Technology, Inc. is a space robotics company that seeks to make space accessible to the world.  The company’s suite of lunar landers delivers payloads to the Moon for companies, governments, universities, non-profits, and individuals.  The company is also developing advanced space robotics capabilities such as terrain relative navigation, mobile robotics for lunar surface operations, and reliable computing systems for mission-critical applications.  Originally spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2007, Astrobotic is pioneering affordable planetary access that promises to spark a new era of exploration, science, tourism, resource utilization, and mining.  Astrobotic’s headquarters is in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a second location in Mojave, California.

This position will be involved in development, manufacturing, and test of Astrobotic’s portfolio of VTVL flight vehicles, engines, and other technologies.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Directing other technicians in fabrication and assembly for mechanical, fluid, and electrical systems
  • Creating and maintaining organized, efficient, safe and clean workshops  
  • Supporting mobile propulsion test stand development, maintenance, and repair
  • Fabricating and assembling prototype components and assemblies as well as the required tooling
  • Assisting facilities personnel in ensuring proper maintenance of facilities
  • Logging and tracking equipment (road vehicles, flight vehicles, test stands, etc.) usage and maintenance.
  • Implementing and enforcing safety and quality standards.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience with fuel systems, fittings, and fuel line manufacturing/assembly/testing
  • Experience with wiring harness layout and manufacturing, including pinning and mil-spec circular connectors (e.g., amphenol)
  • Familiarity with welding/welded joints, including aluminum and thin gage SS; and automated/semi-automated processes like resistance seam welders and spot welders
  • Experience in a professional shop setting with a focus on tool management, cleanliness/FOD, 5S, etc.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings
  • Experience giving guidance and direction to junior technicians
  • Ability to work independently and identify needs before being tasked
  • Ability to help develop new procedures and processes
  • Ability and willingness to learn new fabrication techniques

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in the military or space industry a plus but not required
  • Senior or lead technicians with experience in automotive, racing, or aviation encouraged to apply
  • Experience setting up a new shop/integration facility
  • Ability to use Solidworks to navigate parts and assemblies
  • Manual machining (mill and lathe)
  • Sheet metal work (bend allowances, riveting, cutting/forming)
  • Experience with composites (manual layup, mold prep and vacuum bagging, finish work, bonding, and repairs) a plus

Salary Range: $100,000 - $130,000

The base salary range represents the low and high end of the anticipated salary range for this position. The actual base salary offered for this position will depend on numerous factors including individual performance, business objectives, and the candidates professional experience.  Base salary is just one component of Astrobotic’s competitive total rewards strategy.

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
