Internship Opportunity in the Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

ESA is an equal opportunity employer, committed to achieving diversity within the workforce and creating an inclusive working environment. We therefore welcome applications from all qualified candidates irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, beliefs, age, disability or other characteristics. Applications from women are encouraged.

Location

Noordwijk

Our team and mission

The Systems Department is responsible for System Engineering, Software Engineering, Attitude and Orbit Control, Digital Engineering, Cost Engineering, In Orbit Demonstration projects, Technology Transfer & the Business Incubation Initiative, the Advanced Concepts Team and the management of the General Study Program (GSP).

The Attitude and Orbit Control Systems (AOCS) and Pointing Systems Section provides functional support by following the design and development of the AOCS subsystem in satellite projects for Earth Observation, Navigation, Science and Telecom and Integrated Applications missions. The section carries out technological R&D, harmonisation (identification of key technologies to be developed to serve future applications for enhanced performance and improved efficiency) and standardisation (definition of key applicable requirements to ensure proper subsystem and equipment development and verification) in AOCS and Pointing Systems.

Field(s) of activity for the internship

Topic: GNC/AOCS Autocoding and Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) process hands on experience

The objective of the internship is twofolds:

  • Increase the experience in Autocoding tool set (Mathworks)

You will go through the process of automatic generation of AOCS flight SW starting from project example to exploit the use of the different available Mathworks tools, comparing with the development needs and Autocoding Handbook and identify the advantages and gaps wrt the standard process. You will also prepare a manual to help in the use of the tool set.

  • Explore the bridges between the GNC/AOCS ecosystem in terms of modeling/coding/validating and the System MBSE tool environment (eg SysML)

You will analyse the interface between AOCS modeling tools (Mathworks) and system model-based tools for the full chain identifying needs and gaps and possibly define/specify/implement bridge function(s) to cover them.

The outcome of this activity will have wide visibility being shared within ESA and Industries as input to the MBSE and related Working Group(s).

Education

You must have student status and be enrolled at university for the entire duration of the internship. You should preferably be in your final or second to last year of a university course at master’s level in a technical or scientific discipline.

Additional requirements

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

Educational knowledge:

  • Knowledge and background in Guidance Navigation and Control (GNC) systems, Attitude and Orbit Control Systems (AOCS) as well as SW coding would be an asset
  • Matlab/Simulink familiarity for spacecraft and AOCS (simulator) modeling, Mathworks tool set for Automatic code generation, SW coding (C code) and knowledge of MBSE tools (e.g. Capella, SysML) and related processes would be an asset

Other information

For behavioural competencies expected from ESA staff in general, please refer to the ESA Competency Framework.

If you require support with your application due to a disability, please email contact.human.resources@esa.int.

Internships can take place remotely, on-site or partially on-site depending on the pandemic situation, and in line with the relevant Establishment’s policy (e.g. possible Green Pass requirement) applicable at the time of starting the internship.
