Maxar's WeatherDesk team is looking for an Operational Data Engineer! This position requires someone who has the drive to grow professionally in a hands-on environment. You’ll work independently and with various teams to maintain and improve cutting edge products and services that support a variety of time-sensitive industries (each having a critical need for environmental and meteorological content). WeatherDesk Data Engineers work on problems of diverse scope across weather and climate time scales, where analysis and processing of data requires deep knowledge and the best approaches. Day-to-day with your colleagues:
Monitoring and troubleshooting time-sensitive cloud-based workflows and processes
Supporting time-sensitive data deliveries to our internal and external clients
Working as part of an agile cross-disciplinary team using programming languages such as Python and associated open-source data analytics libraries
Collaborating and engaging with the DevOps team to ensure availability, reliability, and performance of various cloud-based systems
Communicating with Operations and Development teams to understand and advise on product/service status
Learning, and building towards contributing to, the inner-workings of WeatherDesk’s entire suite of product and services
Bachelor's degree in physical science (preferably meteorology), computer science or related field. 4 additional years of experience may be substituted in lieu of degree.
At least 1 year of experience with Python programming language
At least 6 months of experience with Amazon Web Services (EC2, S3, RDS, Parallel Cluster, Lambda, Step Functions) and the interaction with such resources using Python
At least 6 months of experience debugging complex cloud-based workflows using AWS and Linux-based tools
At least 6 months of experience developing in a Linux environment
Must be willing to be online every Monday-Friday between 4:00am and 7:00am US Eastern Time
2+ years of relevant professional experience
Working knowledge of HPC environments with the ability to navigate and debug components and workflows
Understanding of version control software (Git)
Exposure to relational databases such as MySQL and/or PostgreSQL
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Knowledge of atmospheric model data formats such as GRIB and NetCDF
Experience creating graphics with GrADS and various Python data science libraries
Exposure to NOAAPort and other vendor data streams using LDM
Familiarity with programming languages such as Perl and shell scripting, as well as API development in Python (Flask)
