Opportunity:

We invite you to join JPL's Mobility and Robotic Systems Section as a Robotics Systems Engineer to work on mobile robots and/or manipulation and sample acquisition systems deployed to terrestrial or extraterrestrial environments or undergoing testbed validation. This role reports administratively to the Technical Group Supervisor and programmatically to a Project Team Lead or Research Task Manager. As a Robotics Systems Engineer II in the Robot Operations and V&V Group, you will create command sets to achieve operations or test objectives, execute operations in the test or mission environment, analyze resulting data to assess system health and performance, and perform verification and validation testing of robotic systems. Likely projects include Mars Rover Operations, Mars Sample Return missions in development, and terrestrial and extraterrestrial technology demonstrations.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and validate procedures and command files for daily spacecraft, field, or test venue operations of robotic systems.
• Analyze data to assess health, safety, and performance assessment of robotic systems and generate reports.
• Work in a lab facility with hardware, ground support equipment and test equipment
• Perform on-console operations and/or testbed shifts
• Perform verification and validation testing of robotic systems
• Develop and implement operations process improvements and/or software toolsets
• Develop scripts to automate data analysis, command file generation, and other process elements

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree with typically 3 years experience or Master’s degree with typically 1 year in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, System Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with relevant robotics experience
• Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python, JAVAScript etc.
• Knowledge in one or more robotics subdiscipline
• Knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Robotic Systems, Autonomous Systems, Systems Engineering, Software, Embedded Systems, and/or Integration and Test.
• Excellent communication (oral, written, presentation), interpersonal, and organizational skills
• Must be a U.S. Person

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in robotics operation, validation, and/or performance assessment
• Experience in data processing and analysis
• Experience in image processing and analysis
• Experience with mobile robots and robotic arms
• Experience in electrical and mechanical mechanisms for robotic systems
• Experience with Linux or other Unix-like operating systems
• Proficiency in C++, C
• Development of software for embedded applications
• Demonstrated innovation, initiative, and leadership
