We are a diverse team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedication and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling our vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.

This position is in the Flight Sciences Section of the Blue Origin's Advanced Development Programs (ADP) business unit.

ADP is committed to building a future where millions of people live and work in space. In order to do this, we must return to the Moon permanently, and the Blue Moon Lander enables this goal. Blue Moon is a large, flexible, reusable commercial lander for cargo or crew. Our Lunar Pathfinder mission will demonstrate the landerโ€™s core capabilities โ€“ including the privately funded BE-7 landing engine, precision landing sensors, and advanced integrated power and propulsion architecture โ€“ on an early New Glenn flight. The team building this vehicle is rethinking how space systems are designed, with a hard-working architecture, efficient reusability, and rapid design iteration.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse spacecraft development and mission operation engineers, you will contribute to the development of ground-based navigation and orbit determination for our Lunar Permanence project.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, communication skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Build the development of our ground-based spacecraft navigation and orbit determination capability.
  • Collaborate across multiple ADP programs in the development and validation of ground navigation capabilities.
  • Contribute to the definition and implementation of development software and tools for orbit determination and spacecraft navigation
  • Work alongside the GN&C teams to support the migration of ground-based navigation capabilities to on-board GN&C and autonomous navigation.
  • Support the mission operations and mission design team during development and operations

Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Aerospace engineering, astrodynamics or related field with 5+ years of proven orbit determination or spacecraft navigation expertise on flight projects
  • Proven knowledge in orbit determination systems, tools, and infrastructure
  • Solid foundation in state estimation theory, filter implementation, and navigation
  • Strong fundamentals in orbital mechanics and modeling of spacecraft dynamics
  • Experience in development of system level requirements, trade studies and analyses related to mission design for launch and space vehicles
  • Experience with one or more astrodynamics/orbit determination software packages (JPL's MONTE, STK/ODTK, Free Flyer, GMAT, or GIPSY)
  • Experience with at least one of programming languages used to develop navigation software (Python/Julia/Matlab/C/C++)
  • Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired (but not required):

  • Ph.D. with a focus on orbit determination or spacecraft navigation
  • Experience in mathematical modeling of remote sensing for space flight
  • Experience with Human-spaceflight
  • Experience with trajectory design and navigation planning for lunar and deep space missions
  • Experience with Copernicus mission design software.
  • Experience in ground-based orbit determination and maneuver design.
  • Experience in non-linear optimization as applied to spacecraft trajectory design

The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.

Estimated salary wage (Colorado only) 163K- 272K
