The JPL Power and Sensor Systems Section’s experts provide the knowledge and expertise for cutting edge technologies in a wide variety of power related fields including power generation, energy storage, power electronics and sensor development.  The breadth of the section’s technical expertise spans a wide arena ranging from materials research to technology development to flight hardware implementation for unprecedented robotic missions that explore our solar system.

A JPL Power Systems Engineer will lead spacecraft power systems, define requirements, and interface with other members of the spacecraft team. Power systems engineers are involved in every phase of the mission life cycle including concept development, implementation, delivery, and operations.

Responsibilities:

As a member of the Power Systems Engineering Group (3462), you will support power systems for space and terrestrial applications.  Responsibilities include performing trade studies, developing power interface definition, managing requirements, verification and validation, and analyzing power system performance.  

In this position, you will also be expected to:

  • Develop requirements for power system development efforts and V&V plans to verify the designs

  • Produce detailed and accurate documentation products that meet JPL requirements for flight hardware developments

  • Work effectively with power designers in defining optimum architecture design criteria and approach to inform technical design decisions and implementations

  • Present complex subsystem architectures and designs to various levels of line management, project management, and other technical personnel

  • Plan, estimate, prioritize, and manage work activities to support meeting schedules and budgets

  • Serve as a critical team member on teams inside or outside organization, project, activity or function

This position requires the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or related technical subject area with typically a minimum of 9 years of related experience, or Master’s degree in similar disciplines with typically a minimum of 7 years of experience, or Ph.D. in similar disciplines with typically a minimum of 5 years of experience.

  • Experience and/or strong understanding of in Systems Engineering

  • Sophisticated knowledge in some of the following areas: Analog Electronics, Controls, Power Systems Design, Systems Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Integration and Test

  • Experience in power electronic designs including schematics, reliability analysis, board layout, and testing

  • Experience with standard electronic test equipment: oscilloscope, power supply, logic analyzer, etc

  • Experience in power converter topologies, power switching, and closed-loop power control systems and their implementation using microcontrollers and/or FPGAs

  • Excellent oral and interpersonal skills

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with the following design tools:

    • Microsoft Project (for developing project schedule and tracking progress)

    • Microsoft Visio (for developing architecture and block diagrams)

    • Altium Designer (electronics schematic capture and printed circuit layout design tool);

    • LTSPICE (electronics design simulation tool)

    • PSPICE (electronic design simulation tool)

  • Knowledge of industry and or academic practices and standards across a range of applications related to the development, testing, and integration of electronic assemblies for space applications

  • Validated ability to multi-task with an established track record of meeting schedule landmarks

  • Military, Aerospace & Space hardware development experience

  • Experience with power conversion designs for harsh radiation environments and mitigation strategies
