Orbex are currently looking for several GNC engineers to join the team who will help to build the launch vehicle guidance, navigation and control system and the tools needed for its development and validation.  

The exact role responsibilities will be flexible depending on your experience and skills, but you will have the opportunity to play a critical part in the development of our technology.

Orbex is a leading micro-launch company with our Prime vehicle being prepared to launch from our home spaceport, Space Hub Sutherland. We are well placed to be one of the first operational micro-launch companies in Europe with over €40m of project financing secured, a number of customers signed up, our launch licence application submitted, and backing from organisations including UKSA and ESA.

We are a rapidly growing company with staff located between our production and test facilities in Forres, Scotland and Copenhagen, Denmark. Working on cutting-edge advances in rocket fuel technology, Prime’s carbon footprint is up to 96% lower than comparable vehicles, leading to innovations in propulsion and tank structures. A state-of-the-art re-flight system means we can recover and reuse our technology, and innovations in separation mechanisms mean we leave no debris in space.

Having developed in-house production capability, we can 3D print complex engines, produce full-scale carbon composite fuel tanks, and have avionics and software testing labs in both Scotland and Denmark. Based in Forres, you will be right in the heart of this fast-paced cutting-edge company, gaining a unique insight into what it takes to build a new launch vehicle for a buoyant commercial market.

Background

You will have 2+ years of experience in space or aeronautical GNC. You will be able to work with low supervision. . You are likely to have an MSc degree in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, control systems engineering or similar.

Responsibilities

Your duties as a Launch Vehicle GNC Engineer will include:

  • Participate in the design, implementation and test of guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for the launch vehicle.
  • Participate in the development of models for the high fidelity launch vehicle flight dynamics simulator
  • Develop the tools needed for the design, development, and validation of the GNC system
  • Validate and verify GNC system through PIL/HIL test campaigns
  • Participate in the testing and integration of the GNC sensors and actuators
  • Participate in the AIT of the GNC system during the launch campaign, operations and post-flight analysis

Qualifications

• Masters degree or higher in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, control systems engineering, or equivalent experience.
• English language skills

Experience

  • 2-3 years of experience in aerospace or similar environment
  • Launch vehicle or spacecraft GNC algorithms development in Matlab-Simulink
  • Modelling of LV and/or spacecraft dynamics and kinematics inside and outside atmosphere   
  • Navigation filters
  • Control algorithms
  • Auto-coding of C-code from Matlab-Simulink and basic C code implementation skills
  • Development of tools for GNC
  • Operational understanding of navigation system sensors including inertial navigation systems, GNSS receivers, star trackers

This role is based in Forres at Orbex’s headquarters.

Orbex Forres is located at the foot of the Scottish Highlands, near Inverness. It's close to the spectacular coastline, wild beaches and amazing wildlife of the Moray Firth, as well as being a short distance from the world-famous Loch Ness, and Aviemore ski resort.

Security

You must be a UK or European citizen or from a country that is a signatory to the MTCR convention. You may be required to undergo BPSS security screening including a criminal record check.
