Axiom provides unprecedented access to the International Space Station today while building and operating its successor – the world’s first international commercial space station – to improve life on Earth and foster possibilities beyond it.  Our mission-driven team is seeking a bold and dynamic Payload CubeSat Design Engineer who is preoccupied with big questions: Where do we go from here? What are the limits of innovation and exploration? How do we continue to evolve as a species?

SUMMARY: Our team is looking for an energetic and dynamic Design Engineer who will primarily be responsible for aiding Axiom’s Payload Systems design team with developing mechanical designs for payload accessory hardware to be utilized in customer science research and manufacturing.  This hardware will be designed to fly into space and be installed on Axiom station habitation modules using the CubeSat form factor. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about developing new engineering products and components for multi-use science and industry payloads within the commercial space sector, and looks to excel in their technical design role as a pioneer of new spaceflight hardware.  The role requires strong organizational, time management, and communication skills.

  • Design, develop, and document structural and payload interface hardware using the CubeSat form factor for both internal and external payload systems on human spaceflight modules.
  • Assist in the manufacture, test, integration, deployment, operation, and decommissioning of Axiom-developed payload hardware that supports customer payloads related to science and manufacturing. 
  • Gather information and cultivate knowledge of current designs and future trends in human-tended payload systems for commercial and government customers in the space industry.
  • Collaborate with multiple engineering disciplines related to spacecraft design to include structural engineering, life support, crew systems, avionics, and flight operations.
  • Prepare and present designs at various design reviews.
  • Produce other required design documentation.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required
  • 2 - 5 years of engineering experience required (Master’s Degree in engineering or equivalent field can substitute for 2 years of experience).
  • Must have experience using solid modeling CAD software (e.g. SOLIDWORKS)
  • Familiarity with terrestrial chemistry/biology laboratory equipment and/or manufacturing facilities
  • Involvement in space and/or human spaceflight related activities in their personal or professional life
  • Familiarity with some structural analysis and comfortable using hand calculations to inform design
  • Experience in mechanism and/or electromechanical design is preferred
  • Certification in SOLIDWORKS (CSWA, CSWP, CSWE) preferred
  • Experience using PDM preferred

Essential Functions

Work Environment: Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.


• Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.

• Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.

 Physical Requirements

• Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).
