Become part of our team developing the first independent commercial space station. This space station is based on our expandable LIFETM habitat, serviced by Dream Chaser® spaceplane, and will provide the facilities and services for commercial research, manufacturing and tourism.

As a systems engineer for Orbital Reef, you are responsible for architecture integration at the “system of systems” level. You are accountable for identifying and resolving technical issues across program segments and space station modules in support of achieving Orbital Reef on orbit operations by 2027.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or related discipline and typically 14 or more years of relevant experience. Additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Higher education may be considered in lieu of experience. 

  • Strong understanding of requirements management, interface management, system design and integration, risk management, verification and validation (V&V) principles, and other aspects of systems engineering.

  • Technical experience in one or more of the following aerospace disciplines:

    • Communications

    • Electrical Power

    • Flight Software

    • Structures

    • Mechanisms

    • Thermal Control

    • Crew Systems

    • Extravehicular Activities (EVA)

    • Robotics

    • Payloads

    • Environments

    • Mission Systems, Operations Centers, etc.

    • Failure Management, System Autonomy, FDIR, etc.

  • Ability to decompose large complicated problems into manageable pieces, understand problems from different points of view, and explain issues/solutions to other engineers and management.

  • Strong propensity for system-level thinking. An ability to understand wide-reaching impacts of decisions across the program.

  • Experience working with distributed teams, with personnel and teammates spread across multiple locations, organizations, and companies


  • Experience in the aerospace industry, particularly in spacecraft and/or NASA human spaceflight programs, across all phases of the program development lifecycle.

  • Experience developing system architectures or supporting chief engineers.

  • Experience defining customer needs, goals, and objectives.

  • Experience utilizing model based system engineer (MBSE) and digital engineering approaches for long-term cost savings.

  • Experience with or certification in INCOSE standards.

Estimated Starting Salary Range: $117,040.88 - $160,931.20

Sierra Space offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
