As a Data Scientist III at Sierra Space, your fundamental responsibility will be to derive value out of data. You will use skills like advanced data mining to proactively acquire information from various sources. You will process, cleanse, and validate the data integrity of that data and enhance it where required using third party data sources and other techniques. Finally, you will use statistical modeling, machine learning techniques, and ad-hoc analysis to build high quality predictive and prescriptive solutions for the enterprise.

Sierra Space, based in Louisville, Colorado with operations in Madison, Wisconsin, Durham, North Carolina, and Kennedy Space Center, Florida, designs and manufactures advanced spacecraft, satellites, propulsion and environmental systems, spacecraft subsystems and components for the U.S. government (including NASA), commercial customers and international organizations. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the General Manager, Director of Program Planning & Execution, Director of Production, Product Line leaders, and other leaders to analyze/visualize data and develop predictive models to empower stakeholders throughout the Space Applications sector of Sierra Space to make faster and better decisions. Primary stakeholders include Executive Leadership, Program Managers, Production Directors, Product Line Directors, and others.
  • Oversee the installation, configuration, deployment, maintenance, and performance tuning of the Analytics/Business Intelligence environments, including Microsoft Power BI Service, Microsoft Data Gateway, Microsoft SQL Services Analysis Services, SAP Business Objects Enterprise, and other extensions as necessary
  • Lead strategic initiatives to develop and implement data and analytics solutions within the organization while consistently achieving quality, system performance, cost, and on time delivery expectations.
  • Provide recommendations on effective technologies and estimates for level of effort to implement analytics solutions based on formal requirements as well as business expertise.
  • Provide input on and implement strategy for analytics and reporting platforms to drive growth and business improvement.


  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field with at least 6 years of relevant experience
    • Higher education may substitute for relevant experience
    • Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of required education
  • Data-oriented personality
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Applied statistics skills, such as distributions, statistical testing, regression, etc.
  • Understanding of machine learning techniques and algorithms
  • Experience with common data science toolkits, such as R, Weka, NumPy, MatLab, AWS Sagemaker, etc.
  • Proficiency in using query languages such as SQL, Hive, Pig, etc


  • Good scripting and programming skills: Python, PySpark, Scala, R, etc
  • Experience with data visualization tools, such as Power BI, Tableu, etc
  • Extensive knowledge of Analytics/Business Intelligence tool architectures, functions, features, and customization options and implementations
  • Experience creating interactive dashboards and reports from multiple databases; Power BI experience is a benefit.
  • Knowledge of relational databases and multidimensional designs, especially with t-SQL
  • Knowledge of cloud-based data architectures and platforms, especially Microsoft Azure, and utilization of cloud services in hybrid environments
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001, AS9100 & CMMI process standards
  • Madison, Wisconsin job location, but hybrid/remote work possible

Estimated Starting Salary $92,522 - $127,218
