Kepler is on a Mission to bring the internet to space. Incorporated in 2015, Kepler’s guiding star is to enable the space economy through the creation of a communication network in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) that will provide connectivity services to other space missions, be they on orbit in LEO, MEO, GEO, or beyond.  With an expanding base of early customers and our first 19 satellites in orbit, Kepler is continuing to grow and expand its most important asset – the Team! Based out of our HQ in Toronto and with an office in the UK and a newly formed office in the US we are building towards a truly global company delivering a product for the whole world.

We are looking for a Hardware Design Engineer to support the development of the electrical and communication interface of Kepler’s satellite payload; a communication router between multiple communication protocols including optical, Ku-band, and S-band.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop hardware solutions to support Kepler’s space technology that requires the utilization of leading technology and practices.
  • Support design reviews for active designs to minimize design gaps.
  • Conduct and document engineering analysis including derating, reliability, radiation, EMI/EMC, FMECA, and power budgets.
  • Support pathfinding development for future satellite generations that will utilise new technology and interfaces including UFS, 10G+ Ethernet, PCIE5, various other high-speed interfaces, new memory technology, and processors.
  • Maintain technical documentation that captures design decisions, design specifications, block diagrams, interface requirements, and system architecture reports.
  • Develop full product solutions by working closely with other cross-functional engineering teams including RF, mechanical, software, and FPGA.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of Hardware Design experience (schematic and layout) including experience with the following tools, analysis, and technologies:
  • Multi-board Systems / Products;
  • Processors, FPGAs, and SOCs with high-speed interfaces;
  • DAC/ADC for highly sensitive circuitry;
  • Memory including QSPI, UFS, DDR3/4, eMMC;
  • High-Speed Interfaces including JESD204B, 10G Ethernet;
  • Interface Planning;
  • Power and Health Monitoring / FDIR;
  • Oscillators, Crystal Resonators, and Clocks;
  • Signal Conditioning: Passive and Active Filter Design;
  • CAD - Altium, Eagle, or Allegro.
  • Experience working in a rapid learning / agile environment that drives early learnings when requirements are not locked down or when attribute development is needed.
  • Ability to own a project from the architecture stage to the design validation stage.
  • Comfortable in a lab environment and experience using standard tools such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, multimeters, VNA’s, etc.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to put together thorough design documentation.
