The Advanced Development organization is a diverse, collaborative team tasked with rapidly creating the next generation of technology, products, and capabilities for Sierra Space. We are hands-on, embrace risk, and move quickly to fly impactful solutions for our customers. The Sr Director Technology provides leadership and oversight of projects and people in the concept, architecture, design, build, verification and validation, and operation of innovative robotic and manned spacecraft and subsystems for Low Earth Orbit (LEO), lunar, and deep space applications. The Advanced Development team is looking for both experienced and early-career spacecraft engineers and program managers.

Sierra Space, based in Louisville, Colorado with operations in Madison, Wisconsin and Durham, North Carolina, designs and manufactures advanced spacecraft, satellites, propulsion and environmental systems, spacecraft subsystems and components for the U.S. government (including NASA), commercial customers and international organizations.   • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Business Management, Engineering, Computer Science or a related field

  • Relevant experience may substitute for required education

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of one or more of the following disciplines: Business development, capture management, program management, science and engineering programs, acquisition processes, opportunity identification and qualification

  • Working knowledge and experience with various technical matters in support of the exportability, technical determination and release of products and services

  • Demonstrated passion for ideation and innovation, as well as motivating others to act by creating a shared sense of vision or purpose.

  • Ability to quickly grasp technical concepts and understand complex technical and program interdependencies

  • Possess a strategic mindset, linking technology and business

  • Demonstrated ability to work with senior business and government leaders and to provide leadership within the workplace

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to clearly express technical concepts in verbal and written forms; ability to tailor conversations to adapt to technical vs. non-technical audiences

  • Extensive experience developing technology and IRaD (Research and Development) roadmaps, and seeing them through to completion


  • Typically 12-15+ years of relevant experience

  • Demonstrated Engineering leadership roles on spacecraft and spaceflight throughout the lifecycle (concept development, requirements definition, design, development, testing, and operations)

  • Advanced understanding of requirements management, functional requirements parsing, derivation, and allocation; systems design, systems integration, technical risk identification and management strategies, and Verification and Validation (V&V) principles

  • Excellent organizational, documentation, and communication skills (written, verbal, and graphical).

  • Demonstrated experience briefing technical subjects to both technical and non-technical people and delivering key messages and insights from analysis products

  • Self-motivated, with the ability to work rapidly with minimal supervision on projects involving both small and large engineering teams

  • Willingness to work on a small team performing fast paced and complex engineering design evaluations for a diverse mission where everyoneโ€™s input matters

  • Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience

  • Breadth of experience in spaceflight and spacecraft systems, with depth in one or more subsystems such as propulsion, software, avionics, communications, sensors, electrical, structures and mechanisms, thermal management, GN&C, C&DH, TT&C, and payloads

  • Experience developing models, simulations, and automation using software and software languages such as MATLAB, Simulink, Python, Systems Tool Kit (STK), or C++.

  • Experience with software tools such as DOORS, Cameo, Confluence, JIRA, and PLM suites such as Xcelerator, Envovia, and Windchill

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance may be required Learn more about the background check process for Security Clearances

Estimated Starting Salary Range: $188,892.68 - $259,727.43

Sierra Space offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
