What do we do?

ICEYE is building and operating its commercial constellation of small Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites with SAR data available to customers. Our satellites acquire images of Earth at any time โ€“ even when itโ€™s cloudy or dark โ€“ providing commercial and government partners with unmatched persistent monitoring capabilities. Information derived from our SAR images helps customers make data-driven decisions to address time-critical challenges in various sectors, such as maritime, disaster management, insurance, and finance.

What are we looking for?

To support the companyโ€™s growth, we continue to scale our Analytics team and looking for a Database Engineer to join us in the Helsinki area, Finland. ICEYE Analytics is responsible for building solutions that enable near-real-time assessment of the impact of global natural catastrophes and geophysical change using remote sensing technology. These solutions empower end users to quantitatively make timely actions for event characterization, assessment, and response during stressful and uncertain times.

About the role?

As a Database Engineer in Analytics you will bring our databases to the next level. You will work on a broad set of projects: from reviewing new database designs to advising on improving existing ones. You will help us solve performance challenges, optimize the use of resources and enable the whole team to make the best use of data we diligently collect and create internally. We are looking for a persistent and motivated problem solver who will help us standardize so that we can better optimize. You want to build best-in-class solutions using robust coding practices and the latest tech to excel Analytics at ICEYE.


  • Own the daily operations of Analytics databases.
  • Help the teams achieve proper schema design, data modeling, and indexing.
  • Help promote, shape and execute our strategy around the data lake across a wide and varied spectrum of data sources.
  • Work across the teams to optimize queries and overall database usage, including scheduled jobs and replications.
  • Monitor databases and related systems to ensure optimized performance.
  • Handling and creating cloud storage solutions when suitable.
  • Assist R&D teams in designing new databases and connecting them to our infrastructure.
  • Support Commercial Missions team in ensuring performance and reliability of self-hosted databases (PostgreSQL/CrunchyData).


  • 2 + years experience in database administration and design.
  • Significant experience with PostgreSQL and AWS RDS. Bonus points for PostGIS, Crunchy Data and TimescaleDB.
  • Comfortable with at least Python. Bonus points for data stack knowledge (NumPy, Pandas.. ).
  • Some experience with geospatial data is going to make your work easier.
  • Cloud and VMware infrastructure knowledge. We use AWS, but a good knowledge of any cloud provider is a requirement. Bonus points for experience with Kubernetes/Docker.
  • Terraform knowledge is a plus. Otherwise, any other infrastructure as code knowledge is highly valued.
  • You put Agile values into practice every day.
  • You are able to effectively collaborate with cross functional partners and explain sophisticated technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • You are comfortable finding your own way and live well in the continuous stream of change that is inevitable in a start-up that is beginning to scale.
