Sheetmetal/Bulge forming

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of Manufacturing Engineers, you will be responsible for supporting primarily Sheetmetal, Bulge, and Hydro-forming processes. In addition, the position will oversee EDM, ECM, and turning processes for our BE-4 and BE-3U rocket engines. You will be responsible for production and development hardware for existing and new systems using state-of-the-art equipment. You will translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into consistent manufacturing processes which focus on quality and repeatability. You will work closely with production operators, quality technicians, CNC programmers, and engineering counterparts to support machining processes for tight tolerance and complex components (i.e. thrust chambers, injectors, turbo pumps, etc). This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable human spaceflight.

Responsibilities:

•     Define, develop, implement, optimize, and own hydroforming, EDM, and ECM processes of rocket engine components.

  • Primary point of contact for Hydroforming equipment and processes at the Huntsville site
  • Contribute to fabrication DFMA and PFMEA studies to strengthen the feedback loop between design and build.
  • Translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into consistent machining and welding processes which can be deployed across multiple manufacturing sites.
  • Identify, develop, and deploy new processing methods (or refine existing) to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize build schedule.
  • Create/modify manufacturing work instructions to disposition non-conformances.
  • Utilize lean manufacturing methodology for process development and problem solving.
  • Design, procure, install, and qualify custom manufacturing equipment/fixtures.
  • Perform root cause analyses when non-conformances and escapes are identified and deploy corrective actions.
  • Support equipment certifications, qualification, and buy-offs.

•     Troubleshoot and operate equipment as required.

•     Travel required for training and other support activities. (~10%)

  • Collaborate with internal customers (M&P, test technicians, manufacturing engineers, management, and design engineers) to define requirements and align tools to meet objectives.
 

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Aerospace Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university.
  • 4-8 years’ experience with sheetmetal forming  with focus on Hydroforming and bulge forming processes and equipment.Strong mechanical background with metal shaping and machining.
  • Understanding of engineering fundamentals for mechanical design and manufacturing including a strong working knowledge of GD&T.
  • Demonstrate a strong knowledge of hydroforming processes and parameters.
  • Ability to develop processes compliant to industry quality systems such as AS9100.
  • 3+ years of experience in writing process work instructions and planning is a must.
  • Strong written, personal, technical, and software skills (CAD, Scheduling, Issue Tracking, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc)
  • Fluent in reading, writing, and communicating English work instructions
  • Worked on qualification of processes and equipment
  • Can demonstrate history of working with Non-conforming hardware and working on MRB.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • Programming/operation of various CNC machines and EDM
  • Development experience for EDM and ECM processes
  • Understanding of ECM process chemistry
  • 4+ years of experience with EDM or ECM processes and equipment
  • Work with CNC lathes and mills
  • Experience specifying/procuring equipment
  • Experience in machining or welding of exotic materials (i.e. super alloys)
  • Working with post-machining of additive manufactured parts
  • Experience with designing fixtures and tooling
  • CMM multi-axis data interpretation with GD&T
  • Experience with exotic materials (i.e. super alloys) and compatibility with various chemicals
