If you are adept at grasping and translating technical ideas, enjoy pooling resources with multiple teams, and have experience in envisioning and shaping new commercial market opportunities, then we may have the perfect role for you! As a Sr. Business Development Manager of Commercial Markets, you will provide technical support for each of the Sierra Space commercial market sectors, you will meet with customers, facilitate new business opportunities, and develop and execute commercial market sales and capture strategies. You'll oversee market assessment, monitor market activity, identify customer needs, and provide assistance for new product development planning activities. Your duties will also include assessing program opportunities against target market, core proficiency, revenue potential, company ability, and projected business forecasts.

Sierra Space, based in Louisville, Colorado with operations in Madison, Wisconsin and Durham, North Carolina, designs and manufactures advanced spacecraft, satellites, propulsion and environmental systems, spacecraft subsystems and components for the U.S. government (including NASA), commercial customers and international organizations. Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Technical liaison between commercial market BD and all sectors on customer/market needs vs. planned technology development

  • Interface with external companies that broker payloads and end customers (Implementation partners, middleware providers, payload aggregators)

    • Have a broad view of all business development focuses to support a multitude of implementation partner needs

    • Represent Sierra Space to both domestic and international commercial companies

  • Help develop strategic agreements and negotiate business agreements with external companies

  • Work with internal business team (all sectors) on business model strategy and development

  • Help manage database of commercial customer pipeline in support of commercial business line managers

  • Help manage database of commercial company competition

  • Primary commercial market BD liaison to technical and operational working groups

  • Provide analysis and recommendations regarding licensing and regulatory policies that could result in positive impacts to Sierra and partner revenue streams

  • Represent Sierra Space at relevant conferences, industry forums, speaking events, and other engagements

  • Remain tied in with the Sierra Space government relations team and applicable trade organizations to ensure commercial market interests are addressed

  • Be available for frequent domestic and international travel in and out of typical business hours

  • Help lead the growth of the BD Commercial Markets team to align with company and market shifts

    • Help manage and maintain budgets as needed


  • Bachelor's Degree in a related fieldย of study

    • Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of required education
  • Ability to understand customer requirements and operations concepts and interpret, translate, and explain detailed technical ideas to technical and non-technical audience

  • Progressive experience with technical marketing, proposal development, and program management or engineering design

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to motivate/work with others


  • Typically 6-8 years of relevant experience

    • Higher education may substitute for relevant experience
  • Experience in Business Development

  • Exposure to proposal coordination activities to ensure proposals are staffed and supported to achieve success

  • Ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment, emphasizing rapid fielding of capabilities, with minimal supervision

  • Background in the Aerospace and Defense Industry, the US Department of Defense, or US Military
