As the Responsible Engineer (RE) for Energy Storage solutions within this innovative and diverse team in Blue Origin’s Advanced Development Program (ADP), you will apply your electrical power systems expertise and knowledge to understand and scope creative solutions for the highly technical challenges, finding innovative, cost-effective means to meet the ambitious program requirements for specific aerospace applications including unique demonstrator and reusable spacecraft and spacecraft systems.
Along the way, you will develop technical work plans and mentor junior engineers on the team to improve research, techniques, procedures, products, and technologies. You will develop, manage, and maintain a full system design and its associated documentation - CAD, drawings, ICDs, BOMs, etc. and provide technical support during flight build, test, and delivery to other areas of the technical execution team. This role will require you to work closely with the program and manufacturing team through build, test, and delivery of flight hardware.
Develop short- and long-term energy storage solutions for demonstrator and reusable spacecraft and spacecraft systems
Establish requirements for the energy storage system, including battery and ground support equipment
Work with suppliers for energy storage system procurement with support from Supply Chain
Support electrical power system architecture trade studies, analyses, performance characterization and specifications, component selection, and energy storage roadmap direction
Provide Battery Systems subject matter expertise on the design, manufacturing, and operations of lithium-ion batteries
Research and communicate the current and trending advancements of lithium-ion cells
Support battery risk analyses, failure modes effects and criticality analyses (FMECA), design for test/manufacture/cost (DFx), and root-cause analysis of test discrepancies.
Effectively communicate development status, risks, and challenges to management
Write cogent and succinct technical memos and devise innovative, intuitive, and creative ways to visualize quantitative information
B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical or Aerospace Engineering or related field
5+ years of experience in battery development (level commensurate on experience)
Experience with power, battery, and battery management system design
Familiarity with lithium-ion batteries and battery test methods
Background developing battery systems or power electronics for aerospace applications
Desire to work hands-on, both independently and as part of a team, throughout the development and production phases of the mechanical and electronic assembly product lifecycle
Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our culture of inclusion
Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum
Advanced graduate degree in Engineering or related disciplines
7+ years of battery development experience in aerospace applications
Demonstrated experience specifying and designing high reliability safety-critical power electronics, familiarity with battery standards
Background with space avionics systems hardware development, integration, and test
Experience across the full product development lifecycle: concept definition, architecture, requirements capture and development, implementation, verification, system integration, qualification, and release
Proficiency with common electrical engineering design and simulation software (e.g., Altium, LTspice, MATLAB, Simscape)
Passion for aerospace and the development of human spaceflight
