Company Overview:

Relativity is the first and only company to automate aerospace manufacturing by integrating intelligent robotics, software, and proprietary metal 3D printing technology. Disrupting 60 years of aerospace, Relativity offers a radically simplified supply chain, building a rocket with 100x fewer parts in less than 60 days. Our long-term goal is to upgrade humanity’s industrial base on Earth and on Mars.

Relativity seeks a highly talented Principal Propulsion Systems Engineer to join a rapidly growing space startup. The area of influence of this role spans the full range of engine development activities and also involves frequent interfacing with other vehicle engineering departments. This position will provide outstanding leadership and technical contribution to the development of the Terran 1 and Terran R launch vehicles, as well as helping to build a world-class team.

What you’ll do:

You will be responsible for engine system development, including owning the engine balance, architecture and performance trade studies, system and component requirements, and collaborating with the vehicle fluids and integrated analysis teams for vehicle-wide trade studies. This will involve frequently working with propulsion component groups such as engine system testing, integrated design, combustion devices, turbomachinery, and components. You will be heavily involved in testing data reviews, design reviews, anomaly investigations, and communication of system-level progress to leadership. In addition to the technical responsibilities, this senior position will involve programmatic guidance, teambuilding support, and mentoring. In order to be successful in this role, you should be someone who thrives in ambiguity and be capable of leading collaborative projects to completion with minimal oversight.

What you need to know:

In order to be successful in this role, you should have the following:

  • Degree in engineering or related technical field and 7+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong communication skills, and ability to convey deep technical concepts to broad audiences.
  • Demonstrated success working cross-functionally with multiple department leaders to drive projects to closure.
  • Ability to think and operate both tactically and strategically.
  • Deep technical knowledge in at least one major engine subassembly.
  • Experience with engine and launch vehicle development and hotfire testing.

Nice to haves but not required:

  • Experience leading integrated teams
  • Experience in a startup or agile development environment
  • Experience working in a flight development program
