The Company

Astra’s mission is to improve life on Earth from space by creating a healthier and more connected planet. Astra delivered its first commercial payload into Earth orbit in 2021, making it the fastest company in history to reach this milestone, just five years after it was founded in 2016. By achieving monthly, then weekly, then daily launch, we'll create the infrastructure services our customers need in space to build a healthier and more connected planet. If you're excited by a sense of possibility, the chance to innovate, and make a difference here on Earth, we think you should work here too.

As Principal Spaceport Development Manager , you will directly impact Astra's ability to deliver a high launch cadence to our customers. This role has two broad mandates which will empower you to fundamentally change how we access space. First, you will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure we have the physical spaceport and approvals to support upcoming launch needs. Second, you will find ways to meet Astra's customer demand by conceptualizing and developing multiple approaches to spaceport capability worldwide. You will work closely with engineering to develop launch infrastructure needs, and sales to understand pipeline demand. You will start as a team of one but build a team around you. You will communicate and articulate clearly spaceport needs across various teams, and positively but persistently challenge your colleagues to improve and deliver.

How You'll Fulfill Your Mission:

  • Execute: Work with a variety of internal stakeholders (eg: Sales, Mission Management, Launch Operations) and external stakeholders (spaceports' leadership, government agencies) to reserve launch windows, negotiate commercial terms, ensure the necessary launchpad infrastructure exists, and navigate approvals and licenses to support planned launches.
  • Strategize: Develop and execute the long term strategy that enables Astra to have the necessary launchpad availability and predictability to support a high launch cadence including conceptualization of pathways, identification of suitable sites/opportunities, negotiation of commercial/government stakeholders, and project management of work.
  • Partner: Develop and foster relationships with strategic partners (government and private) and contractors to support near and long term spaceport needs.
  • Oversee: Oversee, manage, and grow the spaceport development function including organizational structure, hiring/promotion decisions, professional development and mentorship, best practices, and operational tools/processes.
  • Influence: Work with licensing authorities, federal/commercial spaceports, space agencies, foreign state departments, and strategic partners to streamline rules and processes to benefit Astra's objectives.
  • Business Development: Work collaboratively with spaceports and our customers to win new business or influence regulatory decisions.

Why We Value You:

  • You have a BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field.
  • You have 7+ years direct experience managing complicated, multi-stakeholder projects or products.
  • You have 3+ years of business development or sales experience.
  • You have 3+ years in a leadership position including supervising direct reports, managing cross functional technical resources, communicating/resourcing/executing a strategy, and developing roadmaps.
  • You have direct experience leading major business development or project decisions and launching new products or projects.
  • You have strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Your key traits include Leadership, Dynamic Problem Solving, Getting it Done, Project Management, and Business Development

Desired Multipliers:

  • Go-to-Market, customer/opportunity discovery, and needfinding skillsets.
  • CRE acquisition or development experience.
  • International project management or business development experience.
  • Experience working in an agile system.
  • Experience working with FAA AST, military space agencies, federal ranges, and commercial ranges.
  • Strategic relationships with industry groups and state departments.

ITAR Requirements: This position requires compliance with U.S. Government space technology  trade restrictions, specifically the International Trafficking in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and additional regulations governing satellite, launch vehicle, missile, and other related technologies.  All jobs restricted by these regulations will be contingent upon the applicant’s status as a documented U.S. Person or their ability to receive a trade license from the cognizant government agency; in addition to any required company background checks and in compliance with applicable U.S. and California laws.  Similarly, positions requiring the ability to work on government contracts or a security clearance are also contingent upon the applicants ability to receive the appropriate clearance and be allowed to work on U.S. government contracts.

You do not need to match every listed expectation to apply for this position. Here at Astra, we know that diverse perspectives foster the innovation we need to be successful, and we are committed to building a team that encompasses a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and skills.

San Francisco Applicants: Astra will consider applicants with arrest and conviction records (criminal histories) in a manner consistent with the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance.
