The Senior Director of Mission Security leads the Sierra Space systems engineering community as a recognized industry expert in system security engineering methods, tools, and full lifecycle mission support. This role is enterprise-wide across all Sierra Space Sectors, including Space Transportation, Destinations, and Applications. Technology applications include; LEO / MEO / GEO / interplanetary/ Lunar spacecraft and space destinations, both crewed and uncrewed, space mechanisms, life support and rocket propulsion components, among many others. This role is responsible for enterprise execution of, and accountability for, the mission security related elements of space programs (along with the program manager and program engineering lead.) The Sr Director also provides the mentoring, best practices, tools and guidance for Sierra Space mission security. This role reports to the VP of Engineering.

The Chief Cyber Engineer provides oversight, strategic vision and leadership for Sierra Space Systems Security Integration (SSI) efforts to ensure our commercial and Government space missions are adequately protected throughout the mission lifecycle, from conceptual design through on-orbit operation and end-of-life.  This is a product-focused role, implementing cyber security into Sierra Space’s on-orbit missions and systems.  The role coordinates with our Information Technology and Cyber teams to ensure corporate-wide compliance with government security directives and internal company requirements.  The Chief Cyber Engineer serves as Sierra Space’s Cybersecurity/Information Assurance (IA)/Systems Security Engineering (SSE) Subject Matter Expert (SME) focusing on deliverable Mission, Integration and Research & Development (R&D) Systems.  The Chief Cyber Engineer is responsible for balancing security compliance and risk management with business enablement throughout the Mission Lifecycle.  The Chief Cyber Engineer ensures Sierra Space remains at the forefront of the Systems Security community through continuous evaluation of emerging trends and policies, and development of forward-thinking Systems Security initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead Mission Security Engineering (MSE) strategic and operational planning to achieve business goals by fostering innovation, prioritizing information security initiatives, and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future secure Information Systems (IS) across the organization and in all of Sierra Space’s mission elements.

  • Ensure that appropriate security controls are built into our space systems prior to delivery, launch, and on-orbit operations – starting with conceptual design, requirements development, and including implementation, test, validation, and operation.  Oversee the technical peer-review process that ensures system security is built into all our space products.

  • Develop risk management strategies for validating RMF safeguards to meet various regulatory requirements based upon NISPOM, RMF for DoD IT, ICD 503, JSIG & NIST guidelines.  Tailor these requirements appropriately for Sierra Space’s commercial space missions.

  • Liaison with key Sierra Space IT/cyber department personnel to implement policies and procedures for responding to security incidents, and for investigating, reporting and resolving security violations and incidents.

  • Collaborate with Functional departments (e.g. IT, cyber, production, engineering, planning, etc.) to apply continuous improvement principles to processes ensuring inputs and outputs are optimized.

  • Promote and foster relationships with internal Sierra Space resources and external entities, including government, vendors, and partner organizations, to ensure our products and missions are protected.

  • Ensure the development, documentation, and presentation of IS security education, awareness, and training activities for engineers, program managers, facility management, IS personnel, users, and others, as appropriate.

  • Functional Lead; identify/allocate resources where appropriate supporting program proposals efforts and execution.

  • Remain current with trends and issues in the systems security field, including technologies and pricing in order to advise, counsel, and educate executives and management on their competitive or financial impact.

  • Research and supervise development of automated methods and/or tools to streamline configurations.

  • Collaborate with other subject matter expert directors to ensure product performance meets/exceeds mission requirements. Also participates in strategic technology development of unique capabilities and experiences for Sierra Space’s mission offerings.

  • Support Model-Based approaches (Model Based System Engineering – MBSE, Model Based Definition – MBD, etc) in an Integrated Digital Enterprise (IDE) to ensure integrity and utility of digital twin/digital thread.

  • Development, deployment, maintenance, and training of engineering policies, processes and procedures related to mission security that are on the cutting edge of new-space industry practice.

  • Manage direct-report engineers including Human Resource tasks and budget.

  • Foster a team culture that strives for excellence, delivers exceptional customer service, and proactively seeks professional growth/development.


  • Requires a BA/BS in Related Field. Relevant work experience may substitute for required education.

  • Position requires a minimum of 15 years of experience in a related system security and engineering environment, including management of high-performing teams.

  • Demonstrated experience complying with system security requirements driven by NISPOM, RMF for DoD IT, ICD 503, JSIG & NIST guidelines.

  • Demonstrated experience in all phases of design lifecycle management to include: Requirements, Design, Integration, Test, Operation, and Sustainment. 

  • Must be punctual, organized, and able to communicate effectively

  • Relevant work experience may substitute for required education.

Estimated Starting Salary Range: $180,679.95 - $248,434.93

Sierra Space offers annual incentive pay based upon performance that is commensurate with the level of the position.
