Astrobotic is going to the Moon and will rely on state-of-the-art technologies to do so. Our Future Missions and Technology department is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join our effort to develop these technologies.

This position will be involved in development and testing of Astrobotic’s navigation solution for vision-guided autonomous precision landing. Astrobotic seeks to deliver a hardware and software solution that will enable spacecraft to land precisely at any destination on mapped planetary surfaces, enabling a broad range of high-impact science and commercial missions. Applicants should have a strong knowledge of embedded software development with specific knowledge of one or more related topics including: software engineering, real-time operating systems, safety-critical systems, and embedded vision.

We are building solutions to challenging technical problems with the goal of making space more accessible to the world. The company has received more than 30+ NASA contracts to date, and has a multitude of NASA and commercial contracts in autonomous precision landing, mobile robotics, multi-rover exploration, remote non-geometric terrain sensing, lunar cave exploration, planetary drones, and high-performance computing.


  • Developing robust embedded software solutions
  • Analyzing embedded software performance, correctness, and fault susceptibility
  • Interacting with avionics architects and engineers to design robust computing solutions
  • Working closely with partners including NASA experts, university groups, and commercial clients


  • Strong background in C/C++ embedded software development and version control software
  • Experience with RTOSs such as VxWorks and RTEMS
  • Strong experience with cross-compilation for target embedded software development
  • Experience developing embedded applications that interface with middleware and driver layer software
  • Experience with embedded software design, documentation, implementation, and debugging
  • Ability to work autonomously, learn on the fly, and take initiative in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in communication and technical writing
  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field


  • Experience developing with NASA’s Core Flight System framework
  • Experience with safety-critical embedded system implementation and testing, requirements generation, and software verification and validation
  • Familiarity developing software for PPC and ARM processor architectures
  • Experience developing software for Xilinx SoC devices
  • Experience with software development for spacecraft
  • Experience developing software for redundant or consensus driven systems
  • Experience with Git and GitLab and CI/CD pipeline setup
  • Experience with fundamental robotics mathematics and algorithms
  • Experience with writing research proposals

To conform to U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
