The Company

Astra is launching a new generation of space services to improve life on Earth from space.

A few months ago, Astra became the fastest privately-funded company in history to reach space. We will begin delivering customer payloads into low Earth orbit in Summer 2021, moving to monthly, biweekly, weekly and daily launches by 2025. By achieving daily launch, we'll create the infrastructure services our customers need in space to build a healthier and more connected planet. If you're excited by a sense of possibility, the chance to innovate, and make a difference here on Earth, we think you should work here too.

The Team

The Systems Engineering, Integration & Test Team designs, tests, and continuously improves our launch system including the launch vehicle, launcher and propulsion systems to deliver customer payloads into orbit. The team is comprised of talented engineers collaboratively working through the challenges of launch system and rocket development, test and manufacturing.

All forms of rocket development, qualification and acceptance tests are conducted within our Alameda facility.

How You’ll Fulfill Your Mission

As a Senior Fluids Thermal Engineer, you will be our resident expert developing fluid system models, performing vehicle thermal analyses, developing vehicle and ground system P&IDs, performing flight data analysis and predictions, and improving test and analysis methodologies. You will be our point of contact for contracted analyses, and we will rely on you to set the standards for analyses techniques.

  • Utilize our domain expertise in fluid flow and all forms of heat transfer to develop analysis and test approaches that predict the performance of launch vehicle and ground systems from concept through development, test, and qualification
  • Build large-scale models suitable for quantifying subsystem interactions and ancillary component environments, designing heat exchangers and cooling schemes, performing detailed component finite element analyses to resolve local temperatures and gradients, or using one-dimensional flow models to support design and test of piping systems internal flows
  • Build and run steady-state and transient analytic models of engines and other test articles to predict how they operate
  • Use these models to develop vehicle system requirements, build test sequences, and help with vehicle trajectory design
  • Correlate system models to test data and provide the test & operations team with test sequences and other guidance about safe vehicle operations
  • Improve the existing analytical capabilities, processes, and tools

  • Bachelor degree in an engineering or related field
  • 4+ years professional experience with thermal or fluid analysis
  • Experience with developing analytical models and analyses for launch vehicle and ground support systems including attitude control systems, propellant conditions, propellant loading, tank pressurization systems, purge circuits, etc.
  • Experience with developing 0-D and 1-D thermal/fluid networks models
  • Strong understanding and ability to apply engineering fundamentals including thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and power systems
  • Shown familiarity with data analysis and anchoring models to test data
  • Proficient in programming and knowledge of at least one programming/scripting language (Python/MATLAB/etc)
  • Proficiency with tools such as Thermal Desktop, SINDA FLUINT, and Ansys or similar toolsets

Desired Multipliers

  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • Strong understanding of spacecraft and/or launch vehicle propulsion systems and fluid components
  • Knowledge of ROCETS, NPSS, GFSSP or an equivalent system modeling software package
  • Experience with system or performance analysis across the lifecycle of a product or across different products
