The Company

We are Astra. Our mission is to launch a new generation of services to connect and improve life on earth. We are a small, highly ambitious team with deep technical expertise who love to build things and relish the idea of a grand challenge.

We strive to deliver routine access to earth orbit for enterprises launching services powered by small satellites. Building on over a decade of technology development in rocket propulsion, structures, and avionics, we are applying an agile approach to space launch.

Our headquarters in Alameda, between San Francisco and Oakland, is a sprawling campus supporting full cycle rocket production (e.g. design, manufacturing, test) and mission control. Come thrive at Astra!

The Team

Astra aims to make Daily Space Delivery possible by being the first company to mass-produce orbital class launch vehicles. This necessitates a unique reliability approach that blends lessons from the automotive and aerospace industries. The Reliability Engineering team executes on this vision by driving the highest level of quality in Astra’s design & analysis, supply chain, component manufacture, assembly processes, and test & launch procedures. Our north star is ensuring a successful mission for every one of our customers.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Quality Engineer, you will partner with leaders across Astra’s engineering, production, and test organizations to ensure we are building our rockets to the highest standards.  Expect to get your hands dirty while learning and improving the processes that go into making Astra’s groundbreaking launch vehicle – think machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, assembly, harnessing, and more.

At the end of the day, you will have a tangible impact and significant responsibility for the reliability of the rocket that leaves our factory. You will rely on your technical expertise, plus your ability to quickly learn & digest, to tactfully push back when needed and ensure that we are always making the “right” decision.

You will help us establish processes that put quality first and ensure that we are setting ourselves up for success in a mass-production environment. Astra will be the first company to produce and launch hundreds of rockets and doing so will require a commitment to reliability and continuous improvement – a culture which you will help to create, and drive, across the company.

You will be part of the initial team that defines how we “do” reliability engineering at Astra, evaluating important trades that weigh improved reliability, development timelines, and cost. You will bring a data-driven perspective to critical questions that will shape the future of the business.

How You’ll Fulfill Your Mission

  • Drive Excellence: serve as the champion for reliability in our production environment; drive the completion of high-quality build & test procedures, review and approve dispositions for product non-conformances, and develop production specifications that help us translate engineering requirements to factory floor best practices.
  • Investigate: close the loop on failures that occur in production, test, and flight by performing root cause analyses, creating corrective action plans, and driving plans to closure in order to ensure we never make the same mistake twice.
  • Assess: identify the top risk drivers in our manufacturing, assembly, and test processes; triage these risks to achieve the highest risk reduction with the most effective use of resources; drive engineering and test initiatives that mitigate our top build risks.
  • Question: use your confidence and technical competency to tactfully push back on your peers and company leaders; ensure we are always asking the right questions and are making data-driven decisions that position mission assurance as a top priority.
  • Strategize: help us transition from development to full-rate production by establishing reliability processes and quality documentation that will keep our production line humming while producing high-quality vehicles. Re-think how we do risk assessment, configuration control, statistical process control, control of non-conforming material, ISO 9001/AS9100 compliance, and more.

Why We Value You

  • You partner seamlessly with engineering, production, and test teams, including with shop floor technicians
  • You are eager to jump in & learn how we build our rocket, and bring skills and knowledge that will help us build it better
  • You know your way around an engineering drawing and can help us prioritize Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
  • You ask insightful questions and are excited to explore problems that are several layers deep – a champion of the “5-Why” approach to problem solving, never content with the surface-level answer
  • You help us anticipate issues that haven’t occurred yet, using frameworks such as Process Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (PFMEA)
  • You think carefully about how to instill quality in a product from the very beginning, using tools such as process control plans and Lean Six Sigma
  • You have strong critical-thinking skills combined with the ability to break down complex technical problems into their digestible component parts
  • You have the professional self-esteem and confidence to “push back” on peers and executives when necessary – even when it could mean delaying a launch
  • You are an energetic individual with excellent communication skills (written and oral) and interpersonal skills

Desired Multipliers

  • 4 + years of experience as a manufacturing and/or quality engineer
  • Previous experience in an industry with stringent reliability requirements (automotive, aerospace, medical, etc.)
  • Previous experience with high-performance metallic structures, fluid systems, and/or electronic assemblies
  • Knowledgeable about a variety of manufacturing processes, such as metallic component machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding, and assembly

We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment. Please contact us to request accommodation.
